Mississippi farmers could be sitting on a cash crop
With corn futures closing at record highs on Friday and a drought continuing to devastate crops in the Midwest, area farmers could see more lucrative turnover with this years harvest.
The previous record high per bushel was $7.99 last June, but Thursday the Chicago Board of Trade saw futures for the September delivery traded over $8.
Mississippi State University Assistant Extension Professor John Riley said prior to the drought in the Midwest, the trend yield, or the average yield expected nationally per acre, was 166 bushels, but now the current estimate sits at 146 bushels an acre.
