Abortion clinic struggling to meet new law’s hospital privileges requirement

The state’s only abortion clinic is scrambling to secure hospital admitting privileges for its three doctors before a law going into effect July 1 shuts it down.

Lawmakers who supported the measure have said they hoped it would close the Jackson Women’s Health Organization, located in Fondren, by creating abortion regulations the clinic could not meet.

The law, signed recently by Gov. Phil Bryant, requires that abortion providers be board certified or eligible in obstetrics and gynecology as well as possess privileges at a local hospital.
