DeSoto presses USDA to keep FSA and Rural Development offices

DeSoto County isn’t giving up on trying to keep its place on the federal Farm Service Agency map after officials announced the office’s closing in Hernando.

“It makes you wonder if the people who make these decisions even know what a tractor looks like,” said Jessie Medlin, president of the county’s Board of Supervisors and a cattleman in the Olive Branch area.

He said, “We’ll put our heads together with (board attorney) Tony (Nowak) and see if there is some type of appeal.”

Meanwhile, lawmakers in Washington also were evaluating options. “I am disappointed that more attention was not paid to concerns raised by our congressional delegation,” U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Miss., a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, said Wednesday.
