Lawmakers told economy on mend

Mississippi’s economy is on the mend but growth will be slow as the state recovers from a nearly five-year crunch, the state’s economist told lawmakers Thursday.

The meeting offered members of the House and Senate an initial glimpse of the outlook for fiscal 2013. Lawmakers will use the information as they work to craft a budget over the next several months.

“We have reason to be cautiously optimistic,” said House Speaker Philip Gunn, R-Clinton. “The economy seems to have stabilized – we’re not growing at a high rate but it doesn’t look like we’re going down either.”
