Why Is The DNC Chair Coming To Jackson?
As we detailed in our post earlier today, DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Shultz will be in Jackson on Thursday to campaign for Johnny DuPree and raise money for Mississippi Democrats, something they certainly need at this point. The MSDP is usually pretty good about not bringing in liberals from out-of-state a few weeks before an election. And Wasserman Shultz certainly fits the definition of liberal in every sense of the word; you just may have no idea who she is.
But from what I’ve been told, parachuting Wasserman Shultz in was the DNC’s idea, not DuPree’s (or anyone in Mississippi I believe). DuPree hasn’t been able to raise much money and certainly can’t compete with Phil Bryant, who has been on the air for a couple weeks now, in that regard. Bryant has most of the PACs on his side, and DuPree has never been a big money guy. His campaign was recently in Washington looking for financial help and I’ve heard they were originally promised nothing, but then the DNC came up with the Wasserman Shultz idea. They would bring her in to raise money and reach out to white women. The thinking behind that is that DuPree needs somewhere around 25 to 28 percent of the white vote, and that white females under 55 were the most likely to consider voting for a Democrat. For DuPree’s campaign, they saw this as the best option available to getting the cash needed to get on the air.
