Turnout, winners top election day surprises
Mississippians ousted two Democratic congressmen for Republicans on Tuesday, an Election Day also memorable for its turnout.
First District Rep. Travis Childers of Booneville lost to state Sen. Alan Nunnelee of Tupelo, and 4th District Rep. Gene Taylor from Bay St. Louis lost to state Rep. Steven Palazzo of Biloxi. Some voters, including those in Madison County, had to wait more than an hour in long lines before casting their ballots.
The official numbers are pending, but turnout is expected to surpass the 2007 gubernatorial election, when 743,900 people voted, Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann said.
