Curry flavor: Former Alabama coach Bill Curry adds spice to South Alabama-Georgia State game

In his 17 years as a head coach at Alabama, Georgia Tech and Kentucky, Bill Curry coached against many tradition-rich schools. Now, the Atlanta native has stepped away from his previous job as a college football analyst for ESPN and stepped into the task as the leader of a new program at Georgia State.

This week, Curry brings his new team to Mobile, a return trip to the state where his wife Carolyn was born, to face South Alabama, another school just starting football.

Because of the similarities, Curry said Saturday’s 4 p.m. game at Ladd-Peebles Stadium holds a lot of importance for both teams.

“I think it is,” Curry said when asked if he felt the game was a measuring stick for both teams. “It’s pretty obvious that it would be. They (USA) went about (starting the football program) in a little different way, playing games last year, but I think it will be a measuring stick.”

The Panthers are 5-3. South Alabama is 7-0 and 14-0 all-time.
