LSU football Coach Les Miles mum on quarterback derby
When asked on the Wednesday SEC coaches teleconference if the extra time would provide a new audition for either Jordan Jefferson or Jarrett Lee to get ahead in the competition, Miles was non-committal. The two have been sharing the job fopr the past three games.
“I think we’re competing every day,” Miles said. “It’s one that obviously the team sees it, it’s a pressure that’s on our guys. We need to improve at that position. Every snap, every practice it allows that competition to continue.”
LSU again struggled in the passing game in the 24-17 loss to Auburn as Jefferson and Lee combined to completed 15 of 28 passes for 89 yards and no touchdowns. LSU’s passing game is ranked 113th nationall out of 120 Football Bowl Subdivision schools with a 138.8 yards per game average. They have combined for only four touchdown passes.
Freshman running back Spencer Ware threw a 39-yard scoring pass Saturday, giving LSU five on the season. Only three teams in the nation have fewer (Army, BYU and UCLA) have fewer.
On Tuesday Miles, was pressed as to why Jefferson and Lee who have been in the program for three and four years, respectively, have not been able to improve.
“We’re throwing it, I can tell you that,” he said. “I don’t know. We’re working at it, the players and the coaches are taking time. We’re throwing balls.
“I guess for me I just expect at some point in time this thing is going to take off. I just think it OK, that what we would well have expected.”
