Mullen, mentor Meyer yield to conflicting self-interests

STARKVILLE — Dan Mullen isn’t afraid to pick up the phone and call his mentor when the need arises.

There’s plenty of sage advice to be given and reciprocated for Mullen and Florida coach Urban Meyer, but such phone calls rarely happen and it definitely won’t happen this week as Mississippi State (4-2, 1-2 Southeastern Conference) travels to face Florida (4-2, 2-2) at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

“I don’t think he’s a phone guy, and I’m not a big phone guy,” said Mullen, Mississippi State’s coach who admits to wanting to do nothing but sit at home and spend time with his wife and son after work.
