Miss. deer hunting seasons set
It’s official: Mississippi deer hunters will have a November primitive weapon season this year.
As expected, the Commission on Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks in a special phone-based meeting today gave final approval to a plan that will allow primitive weapons from Nov. 8-Nov. 19, for antlerless deer only. The same public notice creates a special archery season that will coincide with all gun seasons.
The action was the final domino to fall in a process that began in late June when Attorney General Jim Hood’s office issued an opinion that state wildlife officials lacked the power to allow archery equipment during gun seasons, which are set by the legislature. Without action, the opinion would have technically taken bows out of the hands of archery hunters from Nov. 20-Jan. 19 this fall and winter.
In the same opinion, however, it was suggested the agency did have the power to open special archery and primitive weapons seasons under certain situations, including controlling deer populations.
