Mabus: Goal is to ‘make the Coast whole’ again
Mabus said the goal is “how do we make the Coast whole? It’s not what happens today or tomorrow, it’s what happens long-term.”
He took a helicopter Tuesday to examine the area where the Deepwater Horizon oil disaster took place as well as the Louisiana and Mississippi coasts. President Barack Obama appointed Mabus as the point man for the recovery and restoration of the area affected by the spill — one of the worst environmental disasters in U.S. history.
Mabus praised Obama for moving quickly in the crisis.
Asked why there was a move now for restoration when the spill is continuing, Mabus replied, “If we wait till the well is capped, it’s too late.”
