Despite Attacks, Childers Continues to Fight for Americans’ Second Amendment Rights, Mississippi Values
DC Gun Control Group Helping Alan Nunnelee?
Booneville, MS – Despite recent attacks from a radical anti-gun group, Travis Childers has remained firm in his unwavering support for Americans’ Second Amendment rights. This morning, members of the anti-Second Amendment group, DC Vote, handed out fliers and ran a newspaper ad in North Mississippi mocking the importance of Americans’ right to bear arms, directly attacking Travis’ record of protecting this constitutional right.
“The Second Amendment is a fundamental right, and it is unconstitutional to deny any American citizen this right,” said Travis. “If the local city government in Washington , DC can snub the constitution and take away citizens’ gun ownership rights, what’s to stop any city from doing it? What’s to stop it from happening right here in North Mississippi? I refuse to back down from this fight, and am calling on State Senator Alan Nunnelee to condemn these anti-gun attacks.”
As Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA Institute for Legislative Action, said in April when Childers re-introduced legislation to protect DC gun rights, “It’s a shame that this legislation is even necessary to restore rights that citizens of the District [of Columbia] should already have the freedom to exercise. We are grateful that a bipartisan group of members of Congress led by Senators McCain and Tester, and Congressmen Childers…have taken this significant step to require the D.C. Council to abide by the Heller decision and allow law-abiding citizens in D.C. to protect themselves and their loved ones.”
State Senator Alan Nunnelee was in Washington, D.C. last week talking to lobbyists just before these attacks from radical gun control groups took place. These attacks also come on the heels of the NRA endorsing Travis earlier this week with an “A-plus” rating for his pro-gun record.
When the District of Columbia circumvented the U.S. Supreme Court’s historic 2008 decision in District of Columbia v. Heller and refused to overturn its unconstitutional gun ban, Childers fought back by introducing critical legislation to restore Second Amendment rights to D.C. residents. By helping protect the right to bear arms in our nation’s capital, Childers has worked to set a national precedent. He reintroduced similar legislation in the 111th Congress, and has continued to fight to protect these fundamental American freedoms. This latest tassle over Second Amendment rights gun is another example that when the pressure is on, Travis stands up for North Mississippi and doesn’t back down.
