In the offseason, Pearl sent his assistants to meet with the Denver Nuggets’ staff to learn how they defend ball screens. Their system is called “Ice” and it is used by many NBA teams. That legwork paid off in this game. Cooper tallied 16 points but Bassett had just seven.
“We had to go learn how to do that,” Pearl said. “And in this particular case, we just didn’t let their guards get to the ball screen.”
