The Big 10: Is Bigger Better

Twelve would seem to make the most financial sense for all parties. Really, though, it depends on the teams. If the conference can score one or more of the sport’s megapowers—Texas and Notre Dame come to mind—then blasting past the 12-team ceiling looks appropriate. Even 16 teams wouldn’t be out of the question.
If the pool consists of schools such as Missouri, Rutgers, Syracuse and Pittsburgh, then one is plenty. No package of those schools would generate enough revenue to keep the existing schools happy with their revenues. The team in the middle is Nebraska, which could open the way for bigger expansion but isn’t the top-level brand name to make a 14-team or 16-team league likely.
