2004: The year before Katrina altered ‘normal’ forever
For most South Mississippi residents, 2004 is remembered now as the last year the Coast was normal before the storm of all storms changed us forever.
But 2004 wasn’t without its own moments — local, state and national. It was the year that Haley Barbour took office for the first time; Janet Jackson had a “wardrobe malfunction” during the Super Bowl and a tsunami killed nearly 140,000 people in a dozen nations.
The year began with Barbour promising to focus on job creation, cut state spending and oppose new or higher taxes.
