Wicker blasts health care bill, deficits

Sen. Roger Wicker, during a speech in Lucedale on Thursday, decried health care legislation, which he sees as a government takeover of one-sixth of the economy, and growing federal deficits.

“I have to tell you, there are some issues that are going on in the United States Congress today that make me feel this is the worst of times,” he told a gathering of about 100 people at the meeting organized by the George County Republican Women.

“The health care debate is very troubling to me. Then, the national debt that we are running up and foisting off on not only our children, but also our grandchildren. Those are two great issues that we need to be concerned about.”

Michelle Mersdorf, president of the George County Republican Women, said the group formed in July, and Wicker’s visit is one of the first major events for the 23 members.

Wicker said he is “disappointed to see the House pass what is a $3 trillion takeover of the health care system by the federal government.”
