Melick: Florida’s Urban Meyer is a surprise first test of SEC policy

A week after the Southeastern Conference significantly toughened its policy toward coaches who are critical of game officials, Florida coach Urban Meyer was definitely critical.
Speaking to media on the weekly SEC conference call, Meyer said he asked for the league office to review a play in which Florida quarterback Tim Tebow was knocked down by Georgia linebacker Nate Williams after Tebow handed the ball to running back Jeff Demps and was clearly no longer part of the play.
“That should have been a penalty, in my opinion,” Meyer said. “Obviously, it should have been. You’ve got to protect quarterbacks. That’s the whole purpose. It’s right in front of the referee. I’m not sure how they’re going to handle that …”
