FBI: Violent crime up 9.3% in Jackson
Violent crime in Jackson increased last year in contrast to the national trend of a decline, according to the annual FBI crime report released on Monday.
Nationally, violent crime decreased 1.9 percent, which includes fewer homicides, rapes, robberies and aggravated assaults.
In Jackson, the FBI recorded a 9.3 percent increase in violent crime, from 1,512 in 2007 to 1,652 in 2008. Every category saw an increase from the previous year with the exception of rapes, where the 136 in 2008 was five fewer than in 2007.
The largest percentage increase in Jackson was in homicides. The FBI recorded 63 last year compared to 46 in 2007, a 17 percent increase.
