Well, that makes three out of eight that we know about…

Popular Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney announced during his stump speech at the Fair today that he will be a candidate for re-election to his current office in 2011.

Along with Governor Haley Barbour, who cannot run for re-election, that makes Chaney one of only two statewide elected officials whose plans for 2011 are flatly known.

Add to those two the certain, though unannounced, prospect that Lt. Governor Phil Bryant will be making a run for Governor, and we still have five statewide officials who aren’t saying what they plan to do in 2011.

Of those, Ag Commissioner Lester Spell is a safe bet to run for re-election. Treasurer Tate Reeves and Auditor Stacey Pickering sound like people running for higher statewide office. Harder to read are Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann, who is clearly relishing the job he’s doing, and Attorney General Jim Hood, who says he is, too.
