Words matter to Rep. John Mayo, starts his own blog
OXFORD — John Mayo returned to Mississippi after 18 months in the Vietnam War — at 19, he was one of the youngest officers there — determined to speak his mind.
Today, the Democratic state representative from Clarksdale, whose North Mississippi district includes part of DeSoto County, does just that. His newspaper blogs and e-mail messages range from his thoughts on state spending to reviews of the latest movie he’s seen.
He managed to do both in a recent message. His review of “Star Trek” was simple: “go see it, go see it, go see it ….”
He waxed poetic May 9 in explaining his opposition to a proposed Mississippi resolution urging Congress “to be mindful of state sovereignty enumerated in 10th Amendment to U.S. Constitution.”
Mayo, 62, took pains to explain his opposition in his e-mail message that day.
“The words proponents used on HCR69 were sincere, heartfelt and convincing,” he wrote. “The words the proponents used on HCR69 were, I imagine, identical to the ones used by members of the same House of Representatives in the 1950s and ’60s when trying to avert presidential and congressional actions to assure equal rights for all.
