New center to house homeless in Gulfport
GULFPORT — A workforce housing center to be built in Gulfport will house up to 60 homeless men from Harrison and Hancock counties and provide them job training from a 10,000-square-foot building on 19th Street.
Community leaders and social-service advocates applauded Friday when learning of a total of $2.25 million has been awarded to build the housing center. The funding and the project were announced in a news conference at the John S. and James L. Knight Nonprofit Center.
Organizers stopped short of calling it a homeless shelter, but said the workforce center will be constructed across from Feed My Sheep, a soup kitchen on 19th Street.
