‘Huggs’ and tears in coach’s return to Cincinnati

CINCINNATI — The scoreboard tribute didn’t last even as long as a Britney Spears video, but when it was finished Bob Huggins was in tears. He waved to the crowd at Fifth Third Arena before he bothered to address this situation, then buried his face in a Gatorade towel.

“I knew I was going to tear up for the video, so I didn’t want to look,” Huggins said. “But I thought it was disrespectful if I didn’t look.” After the game, meeting with old “friends” from the local media, Huggins still clearly was affected by the evening. Well, that and the 65-61 loss against the Cincinnati Bearcats he’ll take back to West Virginia. “I detest losing,” he told Cincinnati Enquirer writer Bill Koch, who’d covered Huggins’ first Bearcats team back in 1989. It was as if “Huggs” had never left.
