More than a few people were surprised earlier this week with the vote in the state House of Representatives that approved a hefty increase in the tobacco tax. The bill was sent to the Senate by a margin of 81-39, with 11 Republicans joining 70 Democrats. Thirty-six Republicans and three Democrats voted against the measure. With Governor Barbour on record in favor of at least some form of tobacco tax hike, all the pressure now shifts to the Senate and Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant. What he does with this public policy ticking time bomb will have a lot to do with his political standing in 2011.
