What did we learn in the year of politics?

By: Magnolia Tribune - December 29, 2008

The Clarion-Ledger Editorial, 12/28/8

As we look back over the year of politics in 2008, the focus will be on who won and lost.

Of course, the election of Barack Obama will be one of the historical milestones remembered for a lifetime, regardless of one’s political bent.

Mississippi had some major changes with a new senator and two new representatives in Congress. Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Tupelo, joins a re-elected veteran Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Oxford. U.S. Reps. Travis Childers, D-Booneville, and Gregg Harper, R-Pearl, now join the exclusive congressional club.

The Democrats gained a seat; Mississippi overall lost clout starting over in the seniority department with its freshmen.

The state Supreme Court also had its shifts with the unseating of three incumbent justices.
