Schools: Act would put children ‘first’ in 2009

By: Magnolia Tribune - November 22, 2008

The Clarion-Ledger Editorial, 11/21/8

Mississippi lawmakers have the opportunity to put children first in a number of areas when they convene in January, not the least of which is the Children First Act of 2009.

The proposed legislation is the result of a legislative task force named by the 2008 Legislature to study underperforming schools and districts. It spent more than five months developing recommendations, which it approved Wednesday.

Children are the ones harmed when districts don’t adequately serve their communities, and the state must intervene.

Chairmen of the both House and Senate education committees support the bill.
