Two high-profile jobs in Mississippi will be open for new appointments when President-elect Barack Obama takes office.
That’s because Mississippi’s two current U.S. attorneys are Republican appointees, and Obama likely will put Democrats into those important law enforcement offices in Oxford and Jackson.
Jim Greenlee and Dunn Lampton, both picked by George W. Bush, hold those posts in the northern and southern U.S. District Court districts, respectively.
What most people close to the political scene agree about: These decisions will not be made until it’s clear what roles U.S. Democratic Reps. Bennie Thompson and Travis Childers will play in delivering names to the new president.
Also likely to be involved in some way are Jamie Franks, a Tupelo attorney who is chairman of the Mississippi Democratic Party; former Gov. Ray Mabus, who was an early Obama supporter; and Brad Pigott of Jackson, a U.S. attorney during the Clinton administration.
