City could take over JATRAN

By: Magnolia Tribune - November 12, 2008

The Clarion-Ledger, 11/11/8

The city of Jackson is planning to take over its public bus system for the first time in more than 30 years, the City Council was told Monday.

The move comes in the wake of failing contract negotiations with an Ohio-based company that was expected to run JATRAN. City Attorney Sarah O’Reilly-Evans said the city will know for certain today whether the deal falls through.

“The city wanted to be prepared if we didn’t get a new contractor,” O’Reilly-Evans said.

Texas-based McDonald Transit Associates Inc. has run JATRAN for several years on a month-to-month contract while the city worked to sign on Professional Transit Management.
