STARKVILLE — Mississippi State coach Sylvester Croom caused a mini-stir two weeks ago when he removed the redshirt from freshman receiver Arceta Clark, saying he had potential game-changing speed that could give the Bulldogs’ struggling offense a boost.
Clark made a mini-impact in Saturday’s 14-13 loss to Kentucky, with one carry for 19 yards and two catches for 11 yards, but the freshman who really changed this game was Kentucky quarterback/wide receiver/kick returner Randall Cobb.
Making his first start at QB, Cobb engineered both of UK’s third-quarter touchdown drives. He capped the first with a 5-yard run and ended the second with a 3-yard pass to Maurice Grinter, on the heels of a 15-yard run to the MSU 3.
Cobb completed 7 of 13 passes for 56 yards while splitting time with Mike Hartline. He rushed for 31 yards, caught three passes for 33 yards and returned two punts for 16 yards.
He did not do any kicking – this game.
“He could probably kick, too,” said UK offensive coordinator Joker Phillips. “If I was our field-goal kickers, I’d be worried we’ll have him out there.”
