Davis: Country needs Dave Ramsey

Republican congressional candidate Greg Davis addressed the nation’s economic crisis Thursday during an appearance at the Tupelo Luncheon Civitan Club.

Davis, who will oppose Democratic incumbent Travis Childers on Nov. 4, was the featured speaker at the 90-minute meeting and used much of his allotted time to criticize Washington’s bailout of a Wall Street-created problem.

“Washington has lost touch,” he said. “In my opinion, it’s time America and Congress do a little Dave Ramsey and cut up our credit cards to other countries.”

Ramsey is a well-known Christian author and host of a syndicated radio show promoting a debt-free lifestyle.

The candidate’s remarks came as lawmakers considered a $700 billion package to rescue ailing Wall Street firms.

“Something needs to be done, but not at the taxpayers’ expense,” Davis told the more than 50 people at the meeting held at The Summit Center. “We need to make sure the CEOs and investors (of these companies) are not rewarded.”

Davis received a warm welcome from the Civitans and even told the group a few jokes. He talked about his positions on health care and education, saying he supports reforming No Child Left Behind and opposes creating a national health care system.

Davis also said he strongly believes the nation should seek energy independence by opening up drilling wherever there is oil. He criticized a recent congressional bill that restricted drilling.
