Lack of Playmakers Costing Vols, has Fulmer in Jeopardy

KNOXVILLE — Last year this time, the wolves were howling. Phillip Fulmer’s Tennessee football team had gone to Gainesville, Fla., and gotten spanked, 59-20.
The size of the defeat embarrassed the Vol Nation and the venom was spewing.

Fulmer was able to right the Vol ship, however, and rally the Vols to a share the SEC East title with Georgia and a berth in the SEC Championship Game en route to a 10-4 season.
That quieted the critics, but they are howling again after Saturday’s 30-6 loss in Knoxville to the Gators — the fourth straight loss to Florida since Urban Meyer became head coach.
Fulmer talked Saturday night and again Sunday about how his team was able to snap back last year and suggested it can do it again. With what happened last year, you have to cut Fulmer some slack. The sad fact, however, is that it is unlikely this team will be able to do what last year’s team did because of lack of playmakers and a much-improved bunch of teams left on the schedule.
