5 QUESTIONS
Q. Can we now say that the SEC is the only quality conference in college football?
A. Is there even any point in discussing it? The Pac-10 has one good team (USC). Same with the ACC (Wake Forest) and Big East (South Florida). You can make a case for the Big 12 having three — Oklahoma Missouri and Texas — but the conference has six mediocre-at-best teams pulling up the rear. The Big Ten has Wisconsin and maybe Penn State. Maybe. That’s it. The Mountain West is having a better year than at least half the BCS conferences, too.
Q. Is this right? Northwestern and Vanderbilt are a combined 8-0?
A. Vandy is 4-0 for the first time since World War II and is ranked for the first time in 24 years. Northwestern is 4-0 for the first time in 46 years. Just more proof of what smart scheduling and good coaching can do — even at schools where it is supposed to be impossible to win.
