In Gov. Haley Barbour’s third year in office, then-Lt. Gov. Amy Tuck made a very public break with her fellow Republican when she proposed increasing the cigarette tax and using the additional revenue to decrease the state tax on groceries.
Barbour, who had an iron-fist grip over the Senate where Tuck presided, did not take too kindly to the lieutenant governor’s proposal, which ultimately failed because of his – and his alone – opposition.
While early in current Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant’s term, it is difficult, though not impossible, to see him opposing Barbour in a similar fashion.
It is interesting to compare Tuck to Bryant because it is likely the two will vie for the Republican gubernatorial nomination in 2011. The state Constitution prevents Barbour from seeking a third term.
