High fuel costs are hitting more than Mississippi families, with Gov. Haley Barbour now saying he might need to order state workers to cut back to a four-day week.
Congress has been unable to take any effective action as gasoline prices have skyrocketed, threatening the nation’s economy.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., earlier this month asked President Bush to release some of the nation’s oil reserves to lower the price of gasoline.
But Bush has rebuffed the call and instead suggested Congress allow more drilling in environmentally sensitive areas.
Meanwhile, gasoline has been hovering at nearly $5 per gallon in California, where extra refining costs have boosted the price, and around $4 per gallon in Mississippi.
