Backstrom objects to release of pre-sentencing letters in Scruggs case
Attorney Sidney Backstrom, a co-defendant of attorney Dickie Scruggs in a judicial bribery case, objects to the public release of letters being sent to the judge before they are sentenced Friday.
U.S. District Judge Neal B. Biggers Jr. ruled Friday that the letters should be made public, with exceptions that would include medical information, because they were written to influence a judge about to impose sentences. The Sun Herald had filed a motion that requested the letters be made public.
