Jackson city workers rally for higher pay

About 50 Jackson city workers rallied at City Hall on Tuesday as part of what organizers pledged would be an extended campaign for higher wages.

We’re willing to fight. We’re willing to demand a pay increase for our workers,” Brenda Scott, president of the Mississippi Alliance of State Employees, told the City Council.

City workers last received an annual pay raise of $500 in 2006, according to a MASE news release.

The city approved a contract in late February with city workers who organized a local chapter of the Communications Workers of America. Members of that union were on hand to plead their case for higher wages to offset increases in gas and food prices and insurance premiums.
