First District runoff is just practice for the November election
Childers won the most votes April 22, coming close to winning the simple majority needed to avoid a runoff, while Davis claimed 81.2 percent of the DeSoto vote.
The county’s 12,499 votes cast was a fraction of eligible voters, 71,840, leaving Davis supporters to ponder what might have been if more DeSoto voters had shown up.
For the runoff, Davis’s fellow mayors are vying to see which city has the biggest turnout today.
DeSoto businesses also have gotten involved with Wake Up DeSoto, a non-partisan get-out-the-vote campaign.
About 30 restaurants and other businesses will be offering election day specials.
DeSoto County officials reported Monday that 421 absentee ballots had been cast in the runoff.
Anyone who was eligible to vote on April 22 is permitted to vote in today’s election. It doesn’t matter whether they actually voted in the special election.
