Thompson pushes probe of passport file breaches

Mississippi’s 2nd District Democratic congressman said he was given assurances by the head of the Secret Service earlier this year regarding the candidates’ safety.

“They said the protocols were in place to address my concerns,” Thompson said. “But this takes it to another level. We will have to reassess the safety of the candidates.”

On Friday, a State Department spokesman said the confidential passport files of Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., Barack Obama, D-Ill., and John McCain, R-Ariz., had been accessed improperly by State Department personnel.

“It’s clearly against the law for anyone other than authorized individuals to have access to this information,” Thompson said.

He also said he’s concerned that breaches at the State Department may be more widespread.

“The other question is, how many members of Congress and others have been breached?” Thompson asked.
