Melton truancy initiative taking shape

Melton has appointed Goldia Revies, director of the city Department of Constituent Services and Public Information, to oversee his program.

Revies said the city has transferred Gregory Riley from the Parks and Recreation Division to manage the truancy initiative.

City Attorney Sarah O’Reilly Evans said City Council approval is not needed for these changes because no new positions are being created.

The program will run this way: Truancy officers will patrol neighborhoods and develop relationships with the youth not attending school.

“They’ve got to try to develop some level of trust to get an understanding and to get them to open up and talk about why they are not in school,” Revies said.
