Legal eagles feel pain from bribery cases

Driving the perception problem and the concern are the indictments and guilty pleas in federal judicial bribery cases that have ensnared famed Oxford attorney Richard F. “Dickie” Scruggs, prominent Booneville attorney Joey Langston and half a dozen others, most of them attorneys.

However, Houchins notes that while the public image problem is strong, the public problem lies at the feet of only about 10 people, compared with the state’s 6,780 attorneys.

Steve Livington of New Albany agrees. He’s president of the Union County Bar Association.

“It’s hurt the reputation of the Bar,” Livington observed. “People now are thinking that about most of Mississippi’s lawyers.”

Internet blogs and commentary by print and electronic media have asked just what is going on with Mississippi’s legal community.
