Terry told ‘blatant lies,’ candidate says
Flanked by about 15 supporters in front of the Lowndes County Courthouse, a candidate for the District 4 seat on the Lowndes County Board of Supervisors, Jeffery Smith, today denied allegations he has a felony record from serving in the United States Navy.

And he gave his accuser, District 4 Supervisor Jim Terry, five days to retract his allegations or else face punitive action.

In a Sept. 19 press release, Terry, who was defeated by Smith in a Democratic primary run-off election, alleged Smith, who is a shop foreman and assistant purchasing clerk for the county, went AWOL – or absent without leave – while serving in the Navy in the 1980s.

However, Terry, who called for Smith to rescind his candidacy, offered no proof or documentation of his claims.
