Anti-tobacco group launches ad campaign targeting Senate Finance Chairman Robertson

A national anti-tobacco group launched an advertisement campaign Monday against the re-election of Senate Finance Chairman Tommy Robertson, criticizing the lawmaker for blocking a vote on a tax swap bill.

“We think it’s very important for his voters to know that he took action to protect the tobacco companies rather than the voters of his district,” said William V. Corr, executive director of the Tobacco-Free Kids Action Fund.

Two bills proposed during the 2007 Legislature would have cut Mississippi’s 7 percent grocery tax in half and increased the cigarette tax to $1 a pack. The bills died when Robertson chose not to bring them up for debate in his committee.
