Sen. Thad Cochran helped derail a controversial immigration bill that would have tightened security on the U.S.-Mexico border and provided a way for millions of illegal immigrants to earn legal status.
Supporters needed 60 votes to end debate and proceed to a final vote on the legislation. But the Senate vote Thursday was 46-53.
Mississippi’s other Republican senator, Trent Lott, was in the minority who voted to try to save the bill.
