Special session needed

Special session needed

By: Magnolia Tribune - June 20, 2007

The Democrat Editorial, 6/19/7

We urge Gov. Haley Barbour to call a special session to enact a voter identification system in compliance with U.S. District Judge Allen Pepper’s decision in favor of Mississippi Democrat efforts to close the state party election process.

While we are not fully in favor of the judge’s ruling allowing closed primaries, we strongly agree that in order to close the primaries, or in order to make sure only legal voters participate in any election process, an ID card, as required by 24 other states, is essential. In reality, the only way to ensure proper identification is with a photo ID card as required in Arizona, Florida, Hawaii, Indiana, Louisiana, Ohio, and South Dakota.
