Melton’s defense disputes behavior

Jackson Mayor Frank Melton was abusive and slurred his words the night he allegedly took part in damaging a northwest Jackson duplex, according to the latest court filing in advance of Melton’s felony trial next week.

Dale Danks Jr., Melton’s lead attorney, said the information in a motion filed by Hinds County prosecutors is irrelevant to the mayor’s charges and is an attempt to sway public opinion before the trial.

“The newspaper certainly is not a place to be making assertions less than a week before the trial,” Danks said. “This appears to me to be another attempt to try this case in the newspaper in lieu of where it belongs.”
