Debt ceiling drama, campaign rhetoric ignores the truth of federal spending in Mississippi
Raising the debt ceiling won’t change the fiscal realities of Social Security or Medicare, but it will protect the standing of the U.S. economy in global markets. And it will continue the mammoth federal subsidies to which the state has long been dependent.

Incrementalism will neither defeat Russia nor deter China
Thus far, we have told the Ukrainians not to bring the war home to the Russians. It is high time President Biden and Congress change their tune.

A Veteran’s View of Memorial Day
Veterans know better than most that the fallen young we honor each Memorial Day are not just names on a wall. They are not an abstraction. They were real people, with their own hopes and dreams and plans for the future. Many of them dropped those plans to answer the call and never got the chance to pick them back up.

Michael Ramirez reminds us that Memorial Day is more than a day off work, or hot dogs on a grill. Memorial Day is remembering that our freedom was bought at a tremendous price.

PEER report on PERS more bold than usual
As found by the Barbour commission, PERS became structurally unsound in 2002 when the Legislature completed raising benefits without providing a funding mechanism. Incorrect estimates of retiree numbers, active employees, salary increases, inflation, and the fixed COLA have conflated the problem. The funding gap has now exceeded $20 billion. Simply pecking at it with rate increases won’t fix it.

Utah’s ‘One Door’ Policy Shows the Way Forward on Safety-Net Reforms
With the one door model, a person looking for assistance is connected to a single point of contact, whose job is to help that person find the services and support they need to get back on their feet. This point of contact is an advocate and ally who will help the recipient achieve their goals.

Despite naysayers, the Legislature consistently invests in Jackson
Rebekah Staples challenges the idea that the Legislature has "disinvested" in Jackson, noting that between 2012-2019 state investment in the Capital City was $263.9 million. The average investment in Jackson exceeds that of the State's investment in 76% of statewide agencies.

National Police Week: Honoring Mississippi’s Fallen Officers
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy declared this week ‘National Police Week,’ in honor of those officers who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty. There are many who deserve that honor in Mississippi. As a state, we have experienced 331 law enforcement deaths in the line of duty. Behind each of these numbers is the name of a fallen officer.

Durham Report: Ex-DOJ Official & Wife Had Big Roles in Pushing Russian Dossier
While it’s bad enough the debunked dossier the FBI used to spy on the Trump campaign was paid for by the Clinton campaign and authored by a foreign FBI informant and his carousing researcher, the newly released report of Special Counsel John Durham strongly suggests a top Justice Department official and his wife had an early hand in shaping the political rumor sheet.
