Governor Reeves provided an update to Mississippi on actions to address the coronavirus and plans to protect public health and minimize the risk to Mississippians.
During the press conference, Governor Reeves signed an executive order establishing the Mississippi Coronavirus (COVID-19) Preparedness and Response Planning Steering Committee.
Led by Dr. Thomas Dobbs, the State Health Officer, and the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH), the steering committee represents a coalition of subject-matter experts and senior representation from various state agencies who will work together on preventative measures, strategic deployment of resources, and collaboration across all levels of government.
“There is no higher priority than ensuring the health and safety of all who call Mississippi home. And we are taking this coronavirus threat seriously. We are taking action now—ahead of any confirmed cases—to make sure that we are ready for any scenario. Bringing together our state’s leaders and experts puts Mississippi in the best possible position to prepare and improve our response plan and activities,” said Governor Tate Reeves.
While there are currently no reported cases of Coronavirus in the state of Mississippi, this committee hopes to ensure that that number stays at zero.
“We have a robust, well thought out, well maintained pandemic flue response that we have worked diligently along with MEMA,” said Dr. Dobbs. “We have an actionable plan that we can implement based on the scenario we are facing.”
He added that any physicians who believe someone needs to be tested for Corona virus can contact the MSDH to have these tests performed.
Dobbs said they plan to continue working toward preparedness and encouraged people to find more information on the coronavirus and preventative measures, at MSDH’s website msdh.ms.gov. The general public hotline has been activated and that number is, 877-978-6453.
