Pay for play in college sports? It’s already happening

For most Americans, transparency matters only at kickoff. That’s when our football teams are exalted or exposed. The rest is just details.
Our mutual obsession has created a shadow industry. When everyone is happy, few will pay attention to what’s passing under the table, or who’s lurking on campus to make it all possible.
And then a former agent starts naming names, claiming he paid more than 30 college players between 1990-96, and the mood suddenly changes.
So, we still care about ethics and eligibility?
Already this year, Reggie Bush has returned his Heisman Trophy out of shame. Georgia wide receiver A.J. Green was suspended four games for selling his bowl jersey on the Internet. Alabama coach Nick Saban struck out at unscrupulous agents, calling them pimps. Are we entering a new era of high standards?
