Yesterday’s crazy, chaotic circus of a day that saw John Calipari leave Memphis to become the University of Kentucky men’s basketball coach could not have happened without two stunningly successful seasons by the 50-year-old Pennsylvania native.
Two years ago, to the UK basketball decision-makers looking for a coach, John Calipari might as well have been named John Doe.
They weren’t even close to looking in his direction. One of his guards at the University of Memphis was accused by a girlfriend of beating her up, another had been arrested for soliciting a prostitute. One of the team’s key post players had appeared in several police reports.
