Tennessee football coach Lane Kiffin might want to consult Vols baseball coach Todd Raleigh or softball coach Ralph Weekly before he takes his team down to Gainesville on Sept. 19. The coaches can fill him in on how to deal with a crushing defeat at the hands of the Gators, because they certainly have some first-hand experience.
Florida’s baseball and softball teams both swept away Tennessee this weekend, making for a quiet 9-hour bus ride home for the Vols.
And for the first time, well, ever, the Gators women’s basketball team is still alive in the second round of the NCAA Tournament while the Lady Vols are watching from home.
The baseball team improved to 14-7, 3-3 SEC thanks to some timely hitting. Center fielder Matt den Dekker hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth in Friday’s 3-2 win, the Gators banged out 16 hits in a 10-2 win on Saturday, and they finished the sweep Sunday with a 7-5 win after trailing 4-1.
“It was a big weekend for us,” coach Kevin O’Sullivan said. “The sweep should give us momentum, but it’s only the second SEC series out of 10 and we have a long way to go.”
