Tide backups eager for QB competition

McElroy has edge in experience, but he’ll have challengers

TUSCALOOSA – Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy has plans.
One of them is to “throw every single day” with receiver Mike McCoy between now and spring practice. Another is to study in order to know the assignment of every offensive position on every play.
“I’m ready to go,” McElroy said after Friday night’s Sugar Bowl. “I’m taking my cleats home right now and getting ready to prepare this spring and prepare myself accordingly to lead this team and get us back to where we were this year.”
Come spring practice, McElroy will be at the heart of the most significant debate facing Alabama’s next football team. For the first time since coach Nick Saban was hired, the Crimson Tide will have a genuine competition for the starting quarterback spot vacated by three-year starter and departing senior John Parker Wilson.
Saban has opened the race this spring for McElroy, freshman Star Jackson and walk-on Thomas Darrah.
